Two tips for staying on schedule during a renovation project

Posted on: 26 February 2018

If you want to avoid the frustration and extra expense associated with delays, it's worth doing everything you can to stay on schedule during your renovation project. Here are two tips which should help you do this.

Carry out the renovation work in the correct order

One of the best ways to ensure that your project stays on schedule is to have the renovation work carried out in the correct order.

For example, if you have hired a team of electrical contractors to rewire the entire property, and a plasterer to re-plaster all of the interior walls, it would be best to arrange for the electrical contractors to do their work before the plasterer does theirs.

The reason for this is as follows; in order to gain access to, and replace the building's wires, the electrical contractors will need to create large holes in both the walls and the floors.

If you were to have the walls plastered before they carried out this task, they would then have to tear down the freshly-applied plaster so that they could perform the re-wiring work.

This, in turn, would be mean that you would have to have the walls re-plastered a second time. This would not only increase your costs but would also extend the length of your project by several days.

Likewise, if you need to have the bathroom floor tiled, but you also intend to have the plumbing in this area rearranged so that you can change the position of the shower or sink, it would be sensible to have the latter carried out before the former.

This will ensure that your plumber does not have to pull up the newly-tiled floor in order to gain access to the plumbing pipes underneath them, which will, in turn, help you to avoid having to waste your time re-tiling the bathroom a second time.

Don't leave your building materials outdoors for extended periods of time

If the building materials you intend to use for your renovation project are left outdoors overnight or whilst you are away from the property for more than a few days, there is a chance that they may end up being stolen.

Thieves often choose to target properties which are undergoing renovation work, precisely because the building materials used for projects of this kind are extremely valuable.

If your materials are stolen, you will have to wait until their replacements arrive to continue with the renovation work. It could take a week or more for these replacement goods to be delivered.

As such, it's important to be cautious about where you store these items. Ideally, you should keep your building materials inside the house (provided the locks on its doors and windows are fully functional).

If this is not an option, you may want to rent a portable, lockable storage container and keep it on the property for the duration of the project, so that you always have somewhere safe to stow your materials. For more information, contact companies like Degree C Pty Ltd.

Colin's Construction Tips

Hello, my name is Colin and this is my construction blog. I am not a construction professional but I do take a keen interest in how to design and build different aspects of a residential home. My interest was sparked when I decided to install an extension on the back of my home in Sydney, Australia. I called in a couple of expert contractors who guided me through the entire process. I learnt so much that after the work was complete, I continued to read and research things. I decided to start this blog to help out others who are interested in construction.
