Choosing Colours for Your Commercial Marine Project

Posted on: 3 July 2018

When you're at the helm of a commercial marine development project, you have a lot of important decisions to make. You have to decide if you want modular or traditional construction, anchored docks or floating piers and aluminium or wooden surfaces—and that's just the beginning.

In addition to those tough choices, you also have to think about your colour scheme. When narrowing in on the right colours, consider the following.

Blues and Silvers

Take a cue from the sea itself and integrate a lot of blues and silvers into your design. When you have changing tides, different parts of the metal work under your pier become visible at different times of the day. Those elements don't have to look cold and industrial. Instead, they can add to the beauty of your project. Consider a design that mirrors the colours of the sea. Go with silver aluminium, blue coatings, and intricate metallic work that is reminiscent of waves.

Alternatively, take a cue from the sky. Integrate bright blues and whites. Or, create a theme that looks like the sunset with deep oranges and reds.

Natural Wood Tones

In addition to mimicking the sea, also consider copying the land in your design. Natural wood tones on the surface of your pier create a sense of continuity between the land and the sea. Although there are a variety of materials you can use, you may want to choose wood because it's so classic. Note, however, that you will have to devote some resources to cleaning the wood. The spaces between the planks tend to allow seaweed to enter, which has to be removed manually.

Beach Hut Colours

If you've ever walked down a beach with a line of huts, you've probably noticed the bright colours of these convenient storage and shade huts. They tend to stretch out in a line, each boasting their own bright blue, purple, green, yellow or other shades. However, in a lot of cases, these iconic huts even have multiple colours on each hut. For instance, you may see seafoam and coral, turquoise and sunshine or multi-coloured stripes.

When designing your project, consider utilising colours like this. For instance, if you're going to have storefronts integrated into your marine construction project, have them painted to resemble the bright colours of beach huts. Alternatively, paint the surface of your pier with bright colours, or use canopies or sunscreens inspired by these colours.

Colin's Construction Tips

Hello, my name is Colin and this is my construction blog. I am not a construction professional but I do take a keen interest in how to design and build different aspects of a residential home. My interest was sparked when I decided to install an extension on the back of my home in Sydney, Australia. I called in a couple of expert contractors who guided me through the entire process. I learnt so much that after the work was complete, I continued to read and research things. I decided to start this blog to help out others who are interested in construction.
