Tips For Integrating Modern Craftsman Architectural Design in Your New Home Build

Posted on: 6 September 2019

Once you have the opportunity to construct a custom home, you need to sit down with your builders to determine various elements of the structure. Usually, this involves coming up with a budget, choosing materials, picking a layout and so on. However, some people tend to overlook the importance of selecting an architectural style for their home. Choosing the right architectural style will go a long way in giving your structure character. Moreover, once you have an architectural style in mind, it is much easier to select materials and come up with a suitable layout since the architectural style will guide these decisions. Below are three tips for integrating modern craftsman architectural design in your new home build.

Give prominence to illumination

One of the major characteristics of the craftsman architectural design is an abundance of natural lighting. Have this incorporated into your new home build by having the builders construct multiple large windows that have been framed with alluring woodwork. While the archetypal craftsman windows were characterised by stained glass, the modern version of craftsman architectural design is focused on the brightness that clean windows bring. The timber embellishments on the window frames are what accentuates the classic appeal of the craftsman style.

Do not limit yourself to wood

When you first think of the craftsman architectural design, your first thought may be to prioritise timber accents. And while wood does play an important role in curating this style, new-age home design is not limited to this material! To add a sense of contemporary chicness to your custom home build, have your builder incorporate natural supplies such as stone. Natural stone couples coupled with timber cross beams help propagate the craftsman theme without your home looking like it was built centuries ago. A flat roof made from fibre cement tiles will also be a great way of including the rustic appeal of craftsman architectural design while still integrating a contemporary touch to the house too.

Spacious interiors

The outdated version of this type of architectural design was characterised by closed spaces and low hanging ceilings. Thus, there was an unfortunate sense of claustrophobia inside the home. If you prefer to make your interiors seem to have ample space, you should opt for an open floor plan that eliminates the feeling of being closed in by the walls. In addition to this, opt for vaulted or ceilings that increase the vertical space in the room. Moreover, have your builders include exposed ceiling beams to create visual interest overhead.

Colin's Construction Tips

Hello, my name is Colin and this is my construction blog. I am not a construction professional but I do take a keen interest in how to design and build different aspects of a residential home. My interest was sparked when I decided to install an extension on the back of my home in Sydney, Australia. I called in a couple of expert contractors who guided me through the entire process. I learnt so much that after the work was complete, I continued to read and research things. I decided to start this blog to help out others who are interested in construction.
