Got Water Issues? How To Tell When It's Time To Discuss Basement Waterproofing Solutions

Posted on: 16 August 2021

If you own a home, you owe it to yourself to protect it against all types of damage, including water damage. If you're like most homeowners, you know that you need to take the appropriate steps to protect the exterior of your home from water damage. However, you might not realise that you also need to protect your basement, which is why waterproofing is so important. If you've never experienced a flood, you might not think that your basement needs waterproofing. Unfortunately, that's not the case, especially if you purchased a preexisting home. If you encounter any of the issues discussed below, it's time to have your basement waterproofed.

Puddles of Water

If you've had puddles of water in your basement, and your basement isn't waterproofed, now's the time to take care of that. You might not realise it, but standing water can cause serious damage to your basement, especially to the concrete surfaces. Because concrete is porous, puddles can allow water to seep down into the pores. When that happens for too long, the concrete can suffer structural damage. To prevent that, the first thing you need to do is take steps to prevent the puddling. The next thing you need to do is waterproof your basement.

Concrete Efflorescence

If the concrete in your basement has developed a white flaky coating, it's time to take care of the waterproofing. The flaky coating is a condition known as efflorescence. Efflorescence occurs when water is allowed to seep into the concrete over an extended period of time. The white flaky substance is actually formed by mineral deposits that come to the surface of the concrete. Waterproofing can stop efflorescence from forming.

Cracks in Walls or Flooring

If you've noticed the appearance of new cracks in your basement walls and floor, don't wait to contact a waterproofing service. Cracks can appear for a number of reasons, including settling, and water exposure. First, as the ground settles under your home, small cracks can develop in the concrete. Second, underground water leaks can lead to concrete cracks. Any type of crack is an indication that you need to talk to a contractor about waterproofing solutions.

Visible Discoloration and Damage

Finally, if the surfaces in your basement show signs of discolouration or damage, contact a waterproofing contractor as soon as possible. Discolouration such as rust or mould is a sure sign that you have waterproofing issues that need to be addressed right away.

Colin's Construction Tips

Hello, my name is Colin and this is my construction blog. I am not a construction professional but I do take a keen interest in how to design and build different aspects of a residential home. My interest was sparked when I decided to install an extension on the back of my home in Sydney, Australia. I called in a couple of expert contractors who guided me through the entire process. I learnt so much that after the work was complete, I continued to read and research things. I decided to start this blog to help out others who are interested in construction.
